    Ордер, дававший английским таможенникам широкие полномочия на обыск любого дома в поисках контрабандных товаров, что широко практиковалось в 1750-е. Впервые законность таких обысков была подвергнута сомнению в массачусетском суде в 1761. Интересы колонистов защищал Дж. Отис [ Otis, James], заявивший, что такие обыски нарушают принцип неприкосновенности жилища, являющийся частью англосаксонского права. Практика обысков была прекращена, но возобновилась после принятия в 1767 законов Тауншенда [ Townshend Acts]. При этом американские судьи часто отказывались подписывать такие ордера. Недовольство ордерами отражено также в претензиях к метрополии, содержащихся в Декларации независимости [ Declaration of Independence]. Четвертая поправка [ Fourth Amendment] к Конституции США запрещает необоснованные обыски и изъятия имущества ["unreasonable searches and seizures"]

Возник в конце 1940-х. Самыми известными исполнителями соула были Дж. Браун [Brown, James] (особенно песня "Пожалуйста, пожалуйста" ["Please, Please, Please"] (1956)) и Рей Чарлз [ Charles, Ray], который первым познакомил с музыкой соул широкую аудиторию ("Что сказать?" ["What'd I Say?"] (1959)). В 1960-х известнейшими исполнителями соула были группа "Мотаун" [Motown group] и А. Франклин [Franklin, Aretha], а также О. Реддинг [Redding, Otis] и С. Робинсон [Robinson, Smokey] (представители мемфисского стиля)
